COILBACK :
COILBACK EP
This Dallas Texas band got
together in early 2000 under the moniker of "Liquor Goat", and even
released a self-titled record. Over the last few year the band went
through numerous line-up shuffles, and eventually changed the name to
Coilback. This five-song EP is their first offering to the public, and
a full-length entitled "Love Is Dead", is due in 2004. The band is
currently; Lew Morris (Lead Vocals / Guitar), Steve Chapman (Backing
Vocals / Bass), and Steven Green (Backing Vocals / Drums). The band's
music is pretty cool, they have these big fat open grooves going on,
and come across as a less intense version of later era Prong with
hints of Tool, Stone Temple Pilots, and Disturbed. The band also lists
Pantera, Korn, and Rob Zombie as influences, but I don't really hear
it coming through in the music. The music is heavy, but nothing close
to what I'd call extreme. If they played any of these tunes on the
radio, no one would have a heart attack, but it's hard enough that
true Metal fans will still love it. The songs tend to gallop along at
a mid-pace speed rather than blast by at 100 mph, which is a positive
thing, as you wanna be able to nod your head to the grooves,
punctuated by the fat bottom end. A good first effort, not
mind-blowing, but good enough that I'll be very interested when the
full-length drops. With the right backing, this is the sort of band
that could easily break wide open. For the official web lair, you can
find them at coilback.com.
